Psoriasis
Psoriasis is an autoimmune chronic skin disorder that affects over 7.5 million Americans. Lesions usually present on areas of trauma such as the elbows and knees but can affect any body part. It may be associated with arthritis which can lead to many other problems down the road. There has been extensive research into the understanding and treatment of psoriasis due to its widespread nature and the fact that it can be very detrimental to the patient's outlook and quality of life. Many patients with this widespread disorder will wear clothing that covers the affected areas so not to be embarrassed in public.
There are many "biologics" that have been developed to help treat rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis that have been very helpful for many suffering patients. We do offer this treatment at our office.
Recently, studies have shown an increased risk of heart disease in patients with psoriasis due to the chronic inflammatory immune system that exists. We encourage all of our psoriasis patients to not smoke or drink alcohol as well as maintain a normal body weight since those factors can worsen psoriasis.
