Rosacea

Rosacea is a very common skin disorder that causes redness and acne type lesions on the face. It not only is unsightly when flared but can also be tender and cause eye irritation. The exact cause of rosacea is unknown but certainly it tends to run in families and in lighter skin types. Factors known to exacerbate this condition include hot spicy foods, caffeine, sun, wind, menopause and heat.

Treatment may consist of topical prescriptions such as Metrogel and Finacea, an oral anti-inflammatory such as Oracea (doxycycline) and laser or IPL for the redness and blood vessel component.

We also recommend very gentle cleansers and sunblocks for our patients such as Cera Ve and Elta MD. Zinc oxide does not tend to sting and aggravate the skin like chemical based sunscreens can do. In addition, mineral based makeup such as Jane Iredale can often be better for rosacea prone skin since it doesn't irritate as much.
